Vol. 3, No. 135, 22.5” x 17.5”, 6-column layout, 4 pages. “By Cyrus Barton.” Very lightly toned pages, sharp, clear type. Bold, engraved images. Large signature in brown ink above masthead, not affecting text. Soiled along two left columns, minor chips to edges. Contains news of the day, legislation by Congress providing appropriations for the “current expenses of the Indian Department, and for fulfilling treaty stipulations with the various Indian tribes...” as well as news from across New England. Page 4 has a poem titled “Aztalan” by Mary Emily Jackson, which was written in Westborough, PA, but may refer to a mythic city in the Southwest, which belonged to Mexico at the time, and was the area described by present-day Chicanos as the fabled “Aztlan.”.
